Finish Off An Untreated Wooden Fence That Surrounds Your Small Business

Blog

An untreated wooden fence that surrounds your small business may be prone to damage if it is exposed to moisture on a regular basis. Enhance the appearance of the wood and protect its surface by staining it and adding a coat of clear varnish over it with the following steps. If you don't want to DIY it, consider hiring a commercial fence company.

Supplies Needed

  • water hose
  • garden sprayer
  • detergent
  • long-handled scrub brush
  • hand sander
  • fine grit sandpaper
  • tack cloth
  • plastic sheeting
  • wood stain
  • mixing stick
  • tray
  • paint roller
  • thin paintbrush
  • clear varnish
  • clean rag

Clean And Lightly Sand The Wood

Use a water hose to spray each side of the fence to remove surface dirt. If stains are present on portions of the wood, fill a garden sprayer's tank with soapy water. Squeeze the trigger on the garden sprayer to wash each stained area. Allow the soapy water to penetrate for a few minutes. Use a long-handled scrub brush to lift each stain. Use a water hose to rinse the soapy water from the fence's surface. Wait for the wood to dry.

If the surface of the fence is rough in any areas, lightly sand them with a hand sander that has a piece of fine-grit paper attached to it. Move the sander in the same direction as the wood's grain. Move a tack cloth over the wood to wipe away any dust particles that are on it.

Protect The Wood With A Coat Of Paint/Stain And Varnish

Cover the ground with a large piece of plastic sheeting to catch any stain or varnish that drips. Open a can of stain or paint and mix its contents with a mixing stick until they are uniform and air bubbles have been eliminated. Pour the stain into a tray. Begin on one end of the fence and apply the stain with a paint roller, using straight strokes. Cover small grooves in the wood's surface with a thin paintbrush. If you used stain, remove any excess stain with an old (but clean) rag.

Once one side of the fence is covered, move the plastic sheeting to the other side of the fence and apply a coat of stain or paint to the wood in the same manner. Wait several hours for the fence to dry. Apply a coat of varnish using the same steps and tools. The varnish will act as an additional protective layer that will prevent moisture from damaging the wood. You may want to apply multiple coats of varnish.

Once the varnish dries, you can safely touch the fence. The varnished fence will improve the appearance of your property. Keep the fence maintained by cleaning it occasionally with soapy water and a scrub brush.
